Shot in 1995 on the Mediterranean coastline of northern Italy, “Rosignano 3 Woman” captures the activities of a populated beach with masterful precision, articulating a seamless union between human subject and geographical environment. As seen in this work, Italian photographer Massimo Vitali documents expansive, yet frenzied landscapes that are teeming with people, a visual realization that readily informs the titling of this series, “Landscapes with Figures." His exquisite panoramas are both formally stunning in their use of saturated color and conceptually charged in their engagement with leisure as a commercial phenomenon.
Massimo Vitali (Italian, b. 1944) studied photography in London before becoming a photojournalist in the 1960s. His most well-known works are his series of large-format Italian beach panoramas. These painterly photographic tableaus are generally marked with saturated color and highly-studied camera placement as well as vertical height. He lives and works between Lucca, Italy, and Berlin, Germany.
