"En Palenque, en Octubre de 1904, la Sra. Daría López se vio grave enferma de preñes: sintiendo un continuo malestar en todo el cuerpo 16 meses, así que reconoció que pasó el termino natural; ella y su marido Procopio Delgado, se angustiaron mucho de tal cosa tan estraña... aclamaron sin cesar Al Smo. Sr. de la Columna y arrojó , dos animales horribles... y sanó. Y en testimonio de eterna gratitud le dedicaron este retablo."
"In Palenque, in October 1904, Mrs. Daría López became seriously ill with pregnancy: she felt continuous discomfort throughout her body for 16 months, so she recognized that she had passed the natural (pregnancy) term ; she and her husband, Procopio Delgado, became distressed. "; much of such a strange thing... they prayed the Holy Lord of the Column and expelled two horrible animals... and healed. And in testimony of eternal gratitude they dedicated this altarpiece to him."
Hermenegildo Bustos was born in Purísima del Rincón, Guanajuato, on April 16th, 1832. Together with José María Velasco and José Guadalupe Posadas, he joins the pantheon of great 19th century Mexican artists. Though highly regarded by Octavio Paz for painting "the most complex, difficult and mysterious human faces to perfection," Bustos was a man of many professions, amongst which painting was only one of them and who reluctantly signed his work on the reverse with the phrase: "Hermenegildo Bustos aficionado".
Little more than one hundred oils on zinc plates and a few canvases by Hermenegildo Bustos of very small dimensions survive today. The significance of his painting has been nevertheless been featured at both the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Museo Nacional de Arte in Mexico City.
Hermenegildo Bustos nació en Purísima del Rincón, Guanajuato, el 16 de abril de 1832. Junto a José María Velasco y José Guadalupe Posadas, integra el panteón de grandes artistas mexicanos del siglo XIX. Aunque muy apreciado por Octavio Paz por pintar a la perfección "los rostros humanos más complejos, difíciles y misteriosos", Bustos fue un hombre de muchas profesiones, entre las cuales la pintura era sólo una de ellas y que de mala gana firmó su obra en el reverso con la frase : "Aficionado a Hermenegildo Bustos". Hoy sobreviven poco más de un centenar de óleos sobre planchas de zinc y algunos lienzos de Hermenegildo Bustos, de muy pequeñas dimensiones. Sin embargo, la importancia de su pintura se ha presentado tanto en el Museo Metropolitano de Arte de la ciudad de Nueva York como en el Museo Nacional de Arte de la Ciudad de México.
